Primal games 2019

I started in 1981, I’ve been training for 38 years now.

How and why did you start to train capoeira?

I was living in Petr√≥polis, Mountain Region in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). I watched a capoeira roda in a square in that city and fell in love instantly.

For you, what is capoeira? What capoeira means?

Capoeira is the minority struggle, the fight for freedom against the oppressor, the fight of a subjugated people. And nowadays, symbolically, it is a power that keep us women in the fight, to acquire, in a world that still is too much male.

Would you indicate capoeira for someone else? Why?

I¬īve been teaching capoeira since 1993, that way I contribute to people that love the capoeira.

Tell us about a capoeirista who you admire and that is an inspiration for you. And why?

My mestre Paulinho Sabi√°. I am with him since the beginning. When I started, he was still in the Senzala capoeira group, afterwards they (mestres Paulinho Sabi√°, Paul√£o do Cear√° and Boneco) created Grupo Capoeira Brasil in 1989. I am the oldest student of the group. All teachings and formation in my capoeira¬īs life came through him.

Which capoeira song do you like best? And why?

Between 1989 and 1991 I was departing from the capoeira, because of personal problems. It was very hard for me deal with the lack of capoeira. Then I made a song that digests what I was feeling. This are the lyrics:

Da capoeira meu senhor,
eu tentei me afastar,
mas dentro do cora√ß√£o,
sempre um berimbau a tocar,
e embalando os meu sonhos,
uma roda, um cantar,
e falei comigo mesmo,
pra capoeira eu vou voltar,
o berimbau, a roda e o jogar vieram ent√£o,
preencher a minha vida e o meu coração.

Eh! Capoeira √© paix√£o, √© amor, √© alegria   (2x)

A capoeira meu senhor √© igual a o amor,

Eh! Capoeira √© paix√£o, √© amor, √© alegria   (2x)

From the capoeira my God
I tried to be apart
but inside my heart
it is always a berimbau playing
and dandling my dreams
a roda, a song
and I told myself
to capoeira I will come back
then, the berimbau, the roda and the game come
fill my life and my heart

Eh! Capoeira is passion, is love, is happiness (2x)

The capoeira, my God, is same as love
If you close your eyes, a strong pain come to your heart
That kills you
with suffering and burning

Eh! Capoeira is passion, is love, is happiness (2x

I have not a preference. I think one motion complements another one and so on.

Capoeira is martial art, is dance, is music, is acrobatics. In your opinion what (of this) is most important? And why?

As I said above, I think one complements the other one. That¬īs why the capoeira is so fascinating.

eu tentei me afastar,
mas dentro do cora√ß√£o,
sempre um berimbau a tocar,
e embalando os meu sonhos,
uma roda, um cantar,
e falei comigo mesmo,
pra capoeira eu vou voltar,
o berimbau, a roda e o jogar vieram ent√£o,
preencher a minha vida e o meu coração.

Eh! Capoeira √© paix√£o, √© amor, √© alegria   (2x)

A capoeira meu senhor √© igual a o amor,

Capoeira interview – instrutora Cigana

What is your name in the capoeira?
Cigana.
What is your capoeira group? And what is your graduation (corda)?
Grupo Capoeira Brasil (Holanda). Green cord / Instrutora.
How long are you training capoeira?
First week of September 20 years.
How and why did you start to train capoeira?
I practiced dance (modern and classical ballet) and at my school there was a yearly end of season show. I gave 2 shows, but there also was a capoeira demo. I was immediately struck by the spectacular kicks and acrobatics, the culture mix and beautiful people. Next week I signed up for classes with Mestre Paul√£o do Cear√° and Professor Bram.
For you, what is capoeira? What capoeira means?
It is my life. A beautiful way to express myself… regardless how I feel. I can enjoy my passion for dance, music, Brazilian culture and the use of space in the circle (roda). I love to PLAY and have challenges and challenge others. Some words that I associate with capoeira are: liberty, harmony and unity.
Would you indicate capoeira for someone else? Why?
Yes. If you look at most capoeiristas you will notice that they are healthy, strong, beautiful, playful and happy people. It is good for anybody and any soul. Often everybody is respected for their individual character and capabilities. My master always says ‚ÄúCapoeira is a medicine for everything‚ÄĚ… And I discovered he is right‚Ķ If you are tired from work? Go play capoeira! Are you feeling down? Go play capoeira! a.s.o.
Tell us a capoeirista who you admire and that is an inspiration for you. Why?
Only one??? In the 1st place my own master Mestre Paul√£o do Cear√°. He is world famous in the capoeira community. I admire his devotion, hard work and love for capoeira. As my master??? He is a perfectionist… but I also get a lot of support from him.
I also respect my first master in capoeira Mestre Tayson, he was great teacher for me, valued the basics, continuity and believed in me.
Which capoeira song do you like best? Why?
‚ÄúLeva Eu‚ÄĚ of Mestre Barr√£o and Mestre Toni Vargas. I love their voices, musicality and the production of that song. A song for me is good when it creates energy, when it makes you want to play.
Which capoeira move do you like best? Why?
The meia lua de compasso, that technique is so interesting and there are so many styles and ways of executing it. If performed well it can be very dangerous and effective.
Capoeira is martial art, is dance, is music, is acrobatics. In your opinion what (of this) is most important? Why?
Capoeira needs the first three elements for an interesting game for me. Acrobatics are less important, nice but extra, as a cherries on the pie.
Do you want to add some comment or remark?
One of the nice things of capoeira is that people play with everyone. For example I have played with:
– adult people;
– sport athletes;
– 80 year old people;
– disabled people;
– small children of 3 years old;
– mentally challenged people.
